Macular degeneration is the medical term describing the loss of this specialised function of the retina. The retina inlets rest on a membrane called Bruch's membrane becomes brittle. Unfortunately there is no treatment for the dry form of Macular Degeneration.

With the wet form, however laser treatment is possible if the leaking abnormal blood vessels is away from the center of the macula. This is a painless out- patient treatment that attempts to seal the leaking blood vessels. Treatment can be repeated if subsequent examination shows that a leak is still present.

You may hear of a number of "cures" for macular degeneration, many of which are dietary supplements, that appears from time to time but none has, so far been proved scientifically to be of any benefit. If you take a normal balance diet with plenty of green vegetables and fruits the no other supplement to your diet is necessary.
